Gothic Key Issue Project

Homework for the October holidays.

1. Finish Dracula.

2. Using Dracula, Dorian Gray, and the six Gothic poems and wider knowledge

of gothic theme, begin your research project on your Key Issue, and the

pathway you would like to explore. Due Date: December 9th 2022

Steps for Gothic Project.

1. Finish Dracula

2. Go back to your Key Issue and really think about how that topic makes your

brain work! What do you find interesting about this Issue, and what particular

angle would you like to explore?

3. Create a ‘your own pathway’ through this Key Issue by creating a thesis

statement/question you would like to explore through your project.

4. Create a Google Doc with other members of your group. You should each

have a different pathway/question.

5. Use the holidays to explore your Key Issue and decide on how you want to

present your project. You can decide on the format (essay/blog/folder with

extensive notes), but ALL students in the class must be able to access and

use/copy your material to revise.

Remember, you will be examined on the Gothic Synoptic Topic during a 15-minute

oral exam (see blog).

The examiner will be asking you to explore ideas

 Do you think it is fair to say that monstrosity is__________?

 Do you think it is fair to say that Gothic monsters are________?

 To what extent can the gothic genre be a means to express concerns

about gender roles/scientific progress/society?

 Is it fair to say that ____________ is a central theme of the gothic genre?

 To what extent can we say that exteriors reflect interior conflicts in the

gothic?

 How gothic writers use supernatural elements to explore _______?

 To what extent are Gothic villains supernatural in the texts you’ve read?

 How easy is it to tell heroes and villains apart in the gothic topic?

 From your reading, how far would you say that Gothic literature is

concerned with morality?

Remember:

Friday 9 December: Gothic dress up day (plus food). Hand in research project

connecting your Key Issue to the wider topic of Gothic art and literature and film.

Details will follow but know I want all the written work to be done by you and NOT

copied from original sources. Focus on set OIB texts. (20 points Pronote per

person, plus 10 points for cohesion of group work).
